The Autry is an intercultural history center dedicated to exploring and sharing
the stories, experiences, and perceptions of the diverse peoples of the American
West. Located in Griffith Park, the Autry’s collection of over 500,000 pieces of
art and artifacts, which includes the collection of the Southwest Museum of the
American Indian, is one of the largest and most significant in the United
States.
We stopped for awhile to hear a nice jazz band playing in the main courtyard of the museum.
Upon entering we were asked if we'd like to take a guided tour which we were pleased to do. Our guide
spent about an hour taking us through the various exhibit rooms and pointing out interesting aspects of the collections of the museum. We were then able to revisit the things we wanted to spend more time exploring on our own.
A guided tour is free and very informative. We enjoyed our visit at this fascinating place.
Lots of hands on activities for children and adults.
In the garden area a docent explains and demonstrates methods for panning gold.
Everyone gets an opportunity to try to find some treasures.
I think we've discovered GOLD!
As we exit the Autry Western Museum we see the Los Angeles Zoo entrance directly across from the museum. We are now off to our next destination very close by. The adventure continues in tomorrows blog post.
