A Night At The Disney Concert Hall

For anyone that has visited downtown Los Angeles it would seem impossible not to take note of the very unusual building located at 111 South Grand known as the Walt Disney Concert hall. It is a stop on my list of places to see when I take out of town visitors on my L.A. Tours. If you are familiar with architect Frank Gehry's work you will immediately recognize this concert hall as one of his. Since I attended a lovely concert there this week I thought I'd share some exterior and interior photographs of this iconic building. The L.A. Philharmonic orchestra who makes its home there were in good form performing Mozart's piano concerto no. 22 and Beethoven's Symphony no. 1.  Conducting was  Esa-Pekka Salonen. Italian Class Treats

Today in my Italian class, breakfast was bought by my classmate Isa at that new French bakery I spoke of the other day in Belmont shore, "O Gourmet French cafe". The quiche, mini plain and almond croissants were really fantastic. High marks earned today for the new bakery in town!

A Sunday Lunch At Joe Jost's

So many people said you've got to take Mike to Joe Jost's the quintessential dive bar of Long Beach. They punctuated this by saying "make sure you eat the famous pickled eggs with your hot dogs and beer!" So finally on April 28th, after living in Long Beach for 34 years we made it to Joe Jost's." We ordered the Joe special sandwiches (housemade polish sausages, served with mustard, Swiss cheese and a pickle wrapped in rye bread, the famous pickled eggs served in a basket of pretzels and yellow chiles. It's divey alright but we've been to divey-er. Joe's is cool divey! We were lucky to snag a table, at 12:30 the place was packed. Took a walk to the back billiards room after we ate and there was room back there, not too busy which probably is Not the case at night. Food and drink were inexpensive and it was a fun place. Now we can finally say we've been to the bar that has been around for over 90 years. We were also told the eggs are pickled in house and outsell the sandwiches with some 12,000 eggs consumed a month! 20,000 schooners of beer are dispensed to go with the food.



 

O Gourmet French Cafe and Bakery

My friend Mitra arranged a nice lunch meet up at the newly opened "O Gourmet French Cafe and Bakery" in Belmont Shore. This was the former Babette's bakery. Located at 4621 E. 2nd street . Open 7 a.m. -6:30. Owner Eric is from Paris and bakes all breads and desserts on site. We liked the cappuccino, baguette sandwiches and salads we ordered. Didn't try any desserts this time. The shop only open a month is still working on interior and patio decor but it does seem promising. A nice place for Isa, Marion, Judy, Mitra and me to have a pleasant lunch together.
