The weather was perfect.
We sat outside in the mid morning hours and shared our thoughts on the book which focused on the relationship built between the author Helene Hanff living in New York and a bookshop clerk in London. The book is composed solely of letter correspondance between the two and the relationship that is born out of this exchange.
Some of the friends shared their own personal family letters, and postcards. We had a good discussion about the relationship of the two main characters in the story and how a friendship grew from this written correspondance. We touched on the value and the lost art of letter writing. A lovely letter written by one of the members Grandmother's to her family before she passed was shared. The letter told her family how loved they were, how appreciated and also how rich her life had been. Many meaningful family moments of nostalgia shared. Very tender, loving words become especially meaningful to hold and read years later after a loved ones passing.
Our day was filled with lots of laughter and warm comradery and lively discussion about the book.
We ate mixed greens with goat cheese, roasted beets and candied walnuts and
a mango chutney chicken salad
We had plenty of drinks
and for dessert, panna cotta with strawberry coulis
We sang "Happy Birthday" to our dear friend Lynda who turned "39".
