Celebrating Dwali

Aria had told me that Sofia had been invited along with 5 other girls to a classmates home to celebrate the religious holiday Dwali. She said that each guest was given a sari to wear and keep. I had heard about this holiday but didn’t exactly understand what it was about. This is what I found: “Every year in October or November, millions of Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains all across the world celebrate Diwali, a five-day festival that marks one of the biggest and most important holidays of the year in India. The religious celebration, which is also referred to as the Festival of Lights, is an auspicious occasion that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and hope over despair.” I’m so happy that Sofia has this opportunity to learn and experience a part of another culture. The idea of celebrating these special ideas “hope over despair, good over evil, light over darkness” is beautiful. How generous of this girls family to invite young friends to learn about their traditions and beliefs. Building bridges of understanding is so important.
