Our book club met today in Newport Beach. Sherri our hostess picked me up at 7 a.m. an early start to get to the beach house. First stop “The Donuttery” for breakfast.
This place had an amazing selection of donuts! We unloaded lots of goodies for the days festivities, food, drinks, and overnight bags for our slumber party.
Book club members started arriving at 11:00.
We had a long leisure lunch,
a wonderful discussion of our book choice “Wellness” by Nathan Hill.
The novel. “Wellness “ focuses on the marriage
of Jack and Elizabeth, who come of age in the bohemian art scene of
mid-1990s Chicago. The novel follows the couples journey through decades
with all the complexities of their married life and individual self
discovery. One reviewer describes it this way:”It's also about
perception and paradox, connections and loneliness, greed and loss,
manipulation and madness. The narrative winds through a buffet of
subjects, and love is the polestar, and the threat. Love at first sight
is endorsed and dismantled, but never abandoned. There’s so much
breadth, from artists to investors, group think to prairie fires,
children to ancestors, “forever homes,” the World Wide Web, health,
sickness, and cures, social media, absence--and the faith in
metaphysics.” Phew 600+ pages. Our book club had mixed feelings some
thumbs up and others not so much. The day however was thoroughly two
thumbs up!
Great fun and
big thanks to our hostess Sherri!
