New Book: "Criminals" byBen Masaoka

I’m slowly acclimating back to my normal waking schedule and it feels good to once again rise before the sun. I get a lot more done. I’m just beginning a new book and it feels somewhat familiar as it is written by a third generation (sansei like me) author who writes about a Japanese brother and sister growing up in a Japanese American community in Los Angeles in the 1950’s and ‘60’s. Again so familiar to my own circumstances. He writes about the Japanese American group activities geared for that community, Boy Scout troops, basketball teams, judo, neighborhood Japanese language schools ( there was one about 6 houses down from where we lived). Lots of familiar things that trigger childhood memories. His father was a gardener and though my dad was not we had many family friends that were. Anyway they talked about church and picnics and it made me want the familiar comfort foods. I took my early morning walk at sunrise (no charging dogs today) and I came home and made potato salad. An homage to all my aunties. The sun is shining and my heart is grateful for simple pleasures and fond memories of a happy childhood. I’m thinking of my parents today.
