Yesterday before the lecture at the Japanese American National Museum we were able to view the current virtual exhibit called "Aki's Market" by Glenn Akira Kaino. This virtual exhibition features a re-creation of the interior of Aki's market which was located in East Los Angeles. It belonged to the artist's grandfather. Another 6 degrees of separation rang true yet again yesterday. Both Mary (my bff that was with me) and myself went to high school with Glenn's parents Ken Kaino and Anne Shiraishi. It was very special for us to see after all these decades Ken and Anne's offspring and the work he is doing as an artist. He has had many exhibitions of his large environmental pieces and sculptures. If you have not been to JANM in Little Tokyo I think you are in for a great experience. Visit this site for more information:
Also if you there just across the street is the Go For Broke Museum which is another important aspect of the Japanese American experience during WWII.
We live in a city which offers so many opportunities. Why not take advantage some great experiences.
