A Belated Family Birthday Dinner "Happy Lunar New Year- Gung Hay Fat Choy!"

Last Saturday night my bff Mary* and her husband hosted a belated family birthday party for me. Since our families love language is food the dinner was centered around a Chinese new years feast. Mary made her family recipes for chow mein from her mother’s recipe and sweet and sour pork belly that her father used to make. For appetizers she made duck filled crepes and fried won tons with sweet dipping sauces. My sister in law Barb (my brother Randy) made a delicious beef with broccoli dish. My sister Jocelyn (husband Vicente) made a family favorite Chinese chicken salad and her irresistible coconut cake. It was, as always, the moments when I want time to freeze so that I can absorb the pure joy I get from being with my family. “Gung hay fat Choy!”Happy New year!

Thank you so much Dave and Mary for   cooking and graciously hosting this wonderful dinner party.

*When I was in the 3rd grade I saw a little girl sitting on a bench by herself. The moment i saw her something in me said “I want that girl to be my friend.” I didn’t know she had just moved to East L.A. from Colorado. I went up to her and asked her if she wanted to play. She said yes and from that moment on we have been a deeply important part of each other’s lives. She is my BFF Mary. When she married  David he too became a part of my family.
