When Sofia left she said I left a message for you in chalk in the back yard. It said “gramma call me on my birthday June 5”. I gave them chalk yesterday to keep them occupied. This morning I went down a rabbit hole of childhood memories. The things we did to occupy ourselves as children during the three long months of summer vacation. Our parents worked and my grandmother who lived with us was home to look after us. Basically we were on our own to make our own fun. It was good. We were outside all day. I loved to play jacks and I knew all the levels. I could play for hours and I loved the heavy metal jacks. I had chalk and I drew my own hopscotch squares in the driveway. The lager/marker i used to aim for the square was made of two Bobby pins hooked together. I preferred a small ball and chain for a weighted marker but most of the time I used what I could find. My brother had a box of marbles and he’d draw circles in the dirt and play with friends that had their own boxes of marbles. He collected a ton of comic books too. He played basketball for hours in our driveway. He made his own skateboard out of wheels from roller skates and a piece of wood. We also would ride our bikes everywhere. The weekends my dad would take us fishing at Hollenbeck park and on Sundays we’d go to church and in the afternoons we’d often visit our cousins or they would come to our house to see our grandma. They were simple times but we had a wonderful childhood with happy memories.
