A long morning walk in misty weather. The jacaranda are in full bloom in our neighborhood . They are beautiful but the falling blossoms stain the ground. Selfishly I’m glad I can enjoy them on adjacent streets from ours. Today is Sofia’s 10th birthday and I will try to call her as she asked on her sidewalk chalk message. I thought about her 5th birthday in 2020 and the year of shutdown. She started distance zoom kindergarten. Will she even remember that she didn’t attend in person in the far future? The one thing that Covid gave me were daily two hour FaceTimes with Sofia.
She was an only child in those days and I was a slight diversion for those long days of sheltering in. We played school endlessly.
She will surely grow up to be a teacher. She’s been lining up her stuffed animal students since she was a toddler. We had wonderful times. I read her books and we made up games and it was a time of laughter and fun in those long isolating days. On the day of her 5th birthday her parents set up a beautiful pink tent with fairy lights in her bedroom and they had a picnic in the tent.
It certainly was a time for all of us to gather our creativity and to make lemonade out of lemons. We are the lucky ones to have survived that test in time. Happy 10th birthday to my dear Sofia. May you have a meaningful happy year.
