Thursday morning: we checked out of our inn and stored our luggage so we could tour the World War II museum. It is housed in a huge building with several other annexes attached by interior bridges, Historically informative it could take you at least a couple of days to absorb all the information. The depth of the horrors of world war and the unimaginable lives lost is riveting. Especially moving were the video interviews of holocaust survivors on the day the American soldiers freed them from the concentration camps. Soldiers accounts of what they found when they entered the camps were raw and deeply emotional. Also the terror of D-Day on the beaches of Normandy were especially hard to conceive. So many young brave soldiers. Their eyes were wet with tears recounting the horror of what they saw. We were there for four intense hours.
Wonderful sculptures by my college room mates dad Fredrik Arnold.
After that we were emotionally drained so we decided to ride the St.Charles streetcar almost to the end of the line. We got off at Tulane college and walked across the street to the beautiful and serene Audubon park.
We stayed there on a bench looking out to a peaceful scene. After sufficiently gathering our emotions we rode the trolley back to the French quarter and picked up our luggage. Checked into our new hotel where we were supposed to meet our daughter Aria and family but their late afternoon flight had been cancelled. We ditched our dinner reservations and had dinner without them drowning our disappointment with a hurricane for me and a beer for Mike. Hopefully they can make a later flight tonight.
We are praying for a safe and speedy arrival asap. Ended the night walking to the Roosevelt Waldorf Astoria hotel to see the beautiful decorations in the lobby.
We want to bring the kids back here to see it.
