Daruma

"Facebook tells me that five years ago today I posted the picture on the left, which I took at the Wisconsin State Fair just after we moved to Madison. At the time, we were feeling a little like the guy in the photo (i.e., a lot was up in the air and we were experiencing deep-fried butter on sticks for the first time). Fast forward five years and we are suddenly making our way in a new place once again. Yesterday afternoon we filled in the eye of Sofia's Daruma doll from Nancy E.  Daruma dolls have a round bottom, so if you tip them over, they come back up, symbolizing resistance, resilience, recovery, and the proverb "Nanakorobi Yaoki" (fall seven times, get up eight"). Our goals for the coming months are pretty simple, so we look forward to filling in our Daruma's other eyeball and in the meantime he will remind us of our tasks - keep both eyes open to the new, the different, the frightening, the exciting, and don't let anything keep you down!" -Aria

Moving on

On August 9th Aria successfully completed the defense of her doctoral dissertation. On August 10th they bid friends and neighbors goodbye with beer and brats on the terrace of the University

On Thursday August 11 they waved goodbye to Madison and drove to their new home in Missouri

Wishing this special trio wonderful adventures, many happy surprises as they "ride on" through life!

Last Day In Madison June 6, 2016

I felt sad to think this was my last day in Madison. I loved my week with the kids in this wonderful city. I have not experienced winters here but I do know the summer days are beautiful with the elegant Capitol building, the wonderful State street shopping and all the great restaurants. I will miss being able to sit on the terrace of the University and look at all the students enjoying beer and brats and that spectacular view of the lake. I will miss the green grassy knolls and the lovely homes we walked by during our evening walks to picnic point. This city has been a great place for Aria, Daniele and Sofia to flourish. What great memories for us all beautiful Madison, Wisconsin!
