In sewing and dress-making , a ruffle, frill, or furbelow is a strip of fabric, lace or ribbon, tightly gathered or pleated on one edge and applied to a garment or bedding or other textile as a form of trimming. A ruffle without gathers or pleats may also be made by cutting a curved strip of fabric and applying the inner or shorter edge to the garment.
A deep (wide) ruffle is usually called a flounce.Ruffles appeared at the drawstring necklines of full chemises in the 15th century, evolved into the separately-constructed ruff of the 16th century, and remained a fashionable form of trim off-and-on into modern times. -Wikepedia

This is wonderful, Barb! I, too, love ruffles -- although I can't wear them, I enjoy seeing them!
I was just reading Paris Breakfast blog and she had a post on how ruffles are so big in Paris these days. I have a cousin who loves ruffles too - she wore a lot of them last summer. So while shopping in HongKong last summer, I took many photos of ruffly attires, to surprise her in a blog post.. I planned to post it and still have not done so. :)
Eden I look forward to that post. I don't really wear ruffled things but I love the way they look. As a child I had a ruffled petticoat and I loved to twirl in it.
Barb, love all the ruffles. I too, love the look of ruffles on others, but not on me.
If you have not yet looked into Bright Star, I highly recommend it!! It is a beautiful movie about the poet John Keats. I really loved it, and it is on my queue right now in netflix.
I loved ruffles growing up but never wear them any longer. They were definitely tough to sew. I would also recommend Bright Star. It is by NZ director Jane Campion who also did the Piano. Just don't expect a 'Jane Austen' type of story. The photography is beautiful.
