Reminiscing

1983 In this photo my husband Mike and I had just recently found out we were expecting our first child. We were both so happy and excited.

Aria Zan Cabot, the light and love of our lives.

c. 1986 Summer fun we took Aria with us everywhere we went

She loved to paint and draw and play independently for hours upon hours.

How quickly the years flew by. Where did that little girl go?

August 2010 - Aria was our great tour guide in the southern region of Basilicata Italy. The roles were truly reversed as she looked after us. What a great memory that will always be for her dad and I.

Tomorrow is Aria's, 27th birthday. I've been looking over some of our old family photos. They make me laugh, they touch my heart with nostalgia and awe and give me pause to think how quickly the years go by.

Before I had my first child, I could not imagine the complex joy parenthood could bring. I could not fathom the depth to which the human heart could love. From the moment I first saw her, and held her in my arms and called her "ours" the love affair began.

When Aria was born, the miracle of her being was more amazing, and more meaningful than I could have ever imagined. It continues to be a gift and a blessing to be a mother to my children. To have been given the privilege to be a part of their lives, to watch them grow and develop into young adults has been beyond incredible to me.
I love the following passage by Kahlil Gibran. His words ring true in my soul. What a wonderful, miraculous part of my life it has been to be a part of their journey in life. Truly, truly a gift. I thank God for these blessings.

"Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit,
not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children's living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let our bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable. "~ Kahlil Gibran
