Literary Women Festival of Authors 2012

Saturday March 10, 2012 the 30th Anniversary of the Long Beach Festival of Authors was held at the Long Beach Convention center. 750 delighted ticket holders were treated to a full day of entertaining and informative talks by seven contemporary women authors.

It was a beautiful morning in our city and by 7:30 a.m. my friends Tracy and Mitra and I had arrived at the convention center. It's important to get there early as the line forms rather quickly.

It was a lovely morning by the ocean.

The ballroom where the lecture and luncheon are held is on the upper floor of the hall.

We met up with four other friends and waited for the doors to open at 8:30.

Table for complimentary coffee, tea and breakfast treats are set up for guests to enjoy.

Shortly after we arrive a long line forms behind us.

The two morning authors (Gillian Gill and Isabel Wilkerson) will speak from 9:15-11:00, followed by a twenty minute intermission to socialize and buy books. Then the large group divide into three break-out session rooms where you pick one of three authors to hear speak. Those authors were: Zoe Ferraris, Shilpi Somaya Gowda and Haley Turner. From 12-1:00 there is time to buy books and have them autographed and then resume in the Grand Ballroom for a lovely lunch.

The afternoon from 2-3:30 are the last two authors of the day. They were Miriam Toews and Lan Samantha Chang.

What a wonderful day filled with thought provoking shared conversations about the writing process, where and how ideas come to fruition on the written page and the journeys individuals travel en route to becoming authors.

My fellow teachers and friends Jo and Grace.

My two great pals, Mitra and Tracy. So happy to spend this day with them.

Here Canadian author Miriam Toews is introduced. She has received numerous literary awards. In her most recent work Irma Voth, Toews draws on the richness of her Mennonite past.

One of the nicest parts of the day was that my sister, Jocelyn was able to experience the conference too.

I had a great time sharing this day with her.
