Mochizuki

The kids in Dallas have had a busy weekend. Yesterday was Rocco’s basketball game. He made two baskets! That was followed by a family arts party where they made gelle prints and some cute dolls .

Today they participated in the Japan Society annual New Years “Mochizuki” celebration. Around the start of the New Year, many Japanese households will take part in the annual tradition of mochitsuki (餅つき), the pounding of rice to make mochi.

Mochi, also called a rice cake, is pounded sweet rice that can be eaten in a sweet or savory dish. They were able to see the mochi making and hold the pounding hammers and watch the Taiko drummers. A fun day experiencing an important tradition of Japanese culture.
