We watched a good Amazon prime film on Linda Ronstadt last night. There are several but this one “The sound of my voice “ was especially nostalgic because in the very early days I think she was around 19 she moved to Los Angeles and started singing at local clubs like the Ash Grove on Melrose and The troubadour on Santa Monica blvd. My old haunts. The years before she was famous she would sign up to sing at the Troubadour Hootenanny Monday nights. It was around 1967-1969 that my cousin Pati and I would go there most every Monday . (That was the time we had our hippie shop in Pasadena) Linda would be barefoot with braids and she’d sing a couple of songs. It was the time the Nitty Gritty Dirt band played there, and members of the Eagles before they were a band, Steve Martin who was an unknown would do his weekly banjo playing . He wore a trick arrow headband that looked like he was shot through the head. Every week he did his silly dance and no one laughed. He finally became famous and was doing the same things on tv shows only people were now laughing hard! He was friends with Jackson Browne who would sing his two songs. Jackson was an unknown but popular with the regulars. I think admission was $2.00 and it was so cool sitting in this small dark club with the likes of Neil Young, Harry Nilsson, Tim Buckley, David Crosby and even one night Steve McQueen. Everyone was there to hear the music of wanna be talented performers. This documentary has footage of those very early Monday night “hoots” at the Troubadour. It was a walk down memory lane for me.
