It was a very rainy Easter morning. We knew we weren’t going anywhere so we were prepared for a party of two. Mike baked a ham with air fried potatoes and I made a chile relleno casserole. The rain came down and we worked on the puzzle and each of us decorated eggs. (Mike’s idea). I didn’t buy an egg dyeing kit but tried using turmeric, coffee and some food coloring. After some time I wasn’t too happy with the color from the coffee and turmeric dye. They were too pale so I started over with food coloring. Mike did his own thing with a 3 d pen he was given. It was the first time he used it and he said he needs more practice and next time not on an egg. Anyway it was fun and great to do on a rainy day. Then we FaceTimed with all the kids and got to hear all about their Easter treats and egg hunts. I hope your day was wonderful.

Dinner at La Vie
As many of you know our dear family friend Helen Tanabe passed away last year at age 106. For many many years my family would celebrate Helen’s birthday by taking her out to lunch. In the most recent years before Covid we would take her lunches to her home where she lived with her daughter Jill and son in law Bobby. Up until age 104 she was mobile and everyday worked on jigsaw puzzles and watched her beloved K-drama tv shows. We celebrated her 106th birthday by her bedside. She was still very clear minded and fun loving but bed ridden. Her passing last year was peaceful. Just prior to March 2 her daughter contacted me to invite us to dinner to celebrate Helen’s 107th birthday and to thank us for all the years we spent celebrating Helen’s birthday with them. Tonight was that dinner. Jill took us to one of Helen’s favorite restaurants “La Vie” a French restaurant. We toasted Helen and had a lively time reminiscing about our wonderful memories of dear Helen. A special night for us all. Happy heavenly birthday Helen.

Fruit Tart for the Bachelor Finale
I thought we should have a special dessert for the Bachelor Finale and I decided to make a fruit tart. This is pretty simple to make. I combined several recipes to make it easy. I made the crust on Saturday and melted/brushed chocolate on it. A lot of recipes say the layer of chocolate keeps the crust from getting soggy if you do this ahead. I assembled this morning so that wasn’t a concern but I added the chocolate just because I’m a fan! I made the custard yesterday and added some grand marnier as suggested in yet another recipe. This morning I assembled. Choosing the fruit topping is always fun. I wished I had kiwi which I have used in the past just for a pop of color. There’s some hidden cubes of pineapple which I added for fun. Anyway the internet has a ton of variations which I used to make this fruit tart.

Literary Women
Today I attended the Long Beach Literary Women’s Festival of Authors which began in 1982. A special and most inspiring day in which women authors speak on their writing process, their inspiration and all that has gone on in their lives before, during and after the writing of their books. I always come away feeling inspired and in awe. This is the first time I’ve attended this conference since 2019. It was food for my soul to be back listening to these creative artists. Magical.

A Walk at Colorado Lagoon and Lunch at a Ramen Cafe
Mike took the day off from work mid morning and suggested we take a walk before the expected rain at 1 pm. We walked around Colorado Lagoon. It was chilly and got us in the mood for a nice hot bowl of ramen. Perfect lunch choice. As we were finishing lunch the rain arrived.

Brownies for the Bachelor
Some times in life you really do need to lighten up and be silly. My friend Sherri and I know how to do that in spades. It’s getting close to the end of the season for “The Bachelor” and our Monday fun nights are counting down. For our dessert last night I baked some brownies and I think they came out well. If you need a good recipe it’s below. For the chocolate I had the big Trader Joe 17.6 oz imported Belgium dark chocolate bar. I broke it in half and put it in a plastic bag to pound it into small pieces. I also added walnuts to this recipe.

Chicken Salad Recipe
There are many good variations on the classic chicken salad and this is one of my favorites. You can substitute roasted pecans for the almonds. I also added dried cranberries and I’d suggest adding more tarragon than the suggested 1 tablespoon. I doubled this recipe which worked well for my book club group of 11 people. Recipe follows: I boiled the chicken one day in advance so making this salad is quick and easy the day of the event.
Ps I served with the mixed green salad with Roquefort/bleu cheese, candied pecans from Trader Joe’s, pears and avocados. Recipe These two salads pair well.

The Troubadour
"Today, the Troubadour on Santa Monica Boulevard is just one of a dozen clubs in Los Angeles presenting name pop-rock talent. But there was a time in the late '60s and early '70s when every young singer-songwriter dreamed of performing in the West Hollywood room's spotlight."-Robert Hilburn
It was created in 1957 by Doug Weston as a small coffee house located 364 N. La Cienega Boulevard. It was next door to the Coronet Theater at 366 N. La Cienega. It originally was called the Troubadour Cafe-Theatre. The small club primarily presented literary readings and plays. West Hollywood nightclub by the late 1970's, having been instrumental in launching the careers of alt-country soft rockers like The Byrds, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt and The Eagles
The club opened in 1957, named after the Troubadour Club in London, England, which was already showcasing rising folk musicians[1]. It was a major center for folk music in the 1960s, and subsequently singer-songwriters and rock.
The Troubadour played an important role in the careers of Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, Hoyt Axton, The Eagles, The Byrds, Joni Mitchell and other prominent and successful performers, who played performances there establishing their future fame. On August 25, 1970, Neil Diamond introduced Elton John, who performed his first show in the United States at the Troubadour. In 1974, John Lennon and his friend, Harry Nilsson, were ejected from the club for drunkenly heckling the Smothers Brothers. Randy Newman started out at the club and comics Cheech & Chong were discovered there. In 1975, Elton John returned to do a series of special anniversary concerts. In November 2007, James Taylor and Carole King played a series of concerts commemorating the nightclub's 50th anniversary and reuniting the two from their 1970 performance. [2]
Other alumni include Damien Rice, Lenny Bruce, Neil Diamond, Leo Kottke, James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, the Pointer Sisters, Sheryl Crow, George Carlin, Tom Waits, Pavement, Rickie Lee Jones and too many more to name. The Troubadour was also home to folk legends such as Bob Dylan, Ramblin' Jack Elliot and Arlo Guthrie.
Today it is well known for presenting emerging UK artists (Radiohead, Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys), punk/hardcore acts, such bands as Billy Talent & Rise Against, the latter filming five nights in a row for a DVD, Generation Lost. It is also still a popular venue to showcase singer-songwriters: Ray Lamontagne, Joanna Newsom, Fiona Apple.
