So here’s a little recap of what happened in the evening. It was the big farewell concert for The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band that prompted this visit to Jackson Hole Wyoming. Many huge thank you’s to my cousin Peggy who months ago planted the seeds of visiting her corner of the world and seeing this group whom I’ve long been a fan.
We passed the first part of the day with fun adventures locally. Around 5 we said goodbye to the guys who were headed to a local airport museum and dinner.
We sat at the bar. We were feeling giddy and I could hardly keep my presence of mind with the anticipation of the concert. We ordered celebratory spritz’s and toasted and laughed so much.
We shared an antipasto: crudo yellowtail in a watermelon gazpacho with cucumber and Calabrian chili oil. So good. Then we each had a pasta dish. Peg had house made cavatelli with elk bolognese, I had fusilli with a spicy n’duja sauce.
Everything was great. The bartender
asked if I wanted another Spritz and I declined and laughed because I need to be clear minded for the concert to come. I really wanted to focus and even packed my binoculars!
We moved on to the concert hall and I spotted the couple that were sitting next to us at the restaurant. Lots of people milling around in the lobby waiting for the doors to open. Excitement was bubbling up inside me and I asked Peggy to take a picture of me in front of the bands sign. Then at 7:45 an announcer came on the loudspeaker. He said “Due to unforeseen circumstances the concert needs to be cancelled!” I looked at Peggy in disbelief. She looked at me and said “I’m too stunned to move.” It was a surprise we never expected. Gradually we made our way out of the venue as some people were just entering. I felt like yelling to them “it’s cancelled!” But kept silent. As we drove over the pass the green trees that were green when we drove into town were covered with snow that had fallen during the hours we were in town. It was a beautiful sight.
When we got home the guys were watching the exciting Knicks game. They felt bad for us missing the concert.
Dave made us drinks to “drown our disappointment”
and Peggy dished up yummy ice cream. It helped.
She sighed “well at least it got you up here to visit us. And I agreed it was a wonderful reason and really so special to be with my cousins.
There are always silver linings!
